Majority of Indian are not able to
comprehend what is written on signs, documents driver’s license and so on
merely because elite people require English as their first language.
It is unreasonable that many people in
India are suffering from this circumstances.
While it is true that English is integral
for communication between states, the Central Government and foreign companies,
is it really necessary to use it within a state where most people have the same
mother tongue? To be perfectly clear, no reasonable person could advocate that
English should not be taught. However, there is no reason to believe that
people could not be fluent if they learn English from their early years onwards
as a second language as other developed countries do.
The statistics on English speaking ability
tends to be unreliable for a host of political reasons. To explore the matter
at a more foundational level, all development begins with education, and
education, of course, stems from language. Yet, language is much more than a
means of communication: it defines our identities. Therefore, because of the
trend of favoring English, people are exposed to the situation where their
identity are eluding.
Opinion
I chose this topic because I wanted to know
how countries where their official language is English cope with the problem of
language since they have another language except English.
In India, this problem is serious one,
since lots of people cannot comprehend English precisely (only to be able to command
a bit of English). I think, for India, it is really tough problem to overcome,
since the country is developing now and do not have enough condition to educate people
in their country.
However, I think japan will not face the
problem like India facing, since education system is functioning well and the
government is working.( japan is really developed as this aspect even when compared to other developed countries.)
Therefore, I think japan will succeed in
the addition of official language in their country by people learning English through
support from government and Education.
