Final Blog Posting (Outline of our NGO)

Purpose of NGO

Make all people in japan fluent in english

Goal

Introduce english as one of the official language in japan

 Activities

Spreading information about effectiveness of English to persuade those people who against our goal through organization homepage, blog, propaganda and so on.

Holding seminars (Going some area in japan and do English seminar for those people who don’t have enough opportunities to get in touch with Englsih

 Networks that we have

Education NGO and NPO

We got partnership with those org because our goals are really similar, providing people with enough ability to success in the future. (job, study abroad……)

Also, forming a tag with Ministry of science and technology.

This ministry is taking important role in English education. Therefore, giving the method like how to make a better education environment would affect entire japan English level and we thought it would lead to the first step to Englishanization in Japan.

How we recruit members

We ask Professional who have strong passion and interest, who can tell people how English would affect our life to do some webinar or seminar whatever to make people interested in this topic and to join our organization.

(For example, owner of a company like Rakuten or politicians who have strong interest in this topic)

Also, through using Internet, mainly making blogs and websites, we advertise how English has great effect in our life and getting signatures from those people who agreed with our mission. (be in part of our community)

Why we saw need in this NGO.

We saw need in this group because japan is taking behind in various aspects now in

Education, science, whatever. Then, we thought the biggest reason is low English command level in japan led to this result. Even though, Japanese English education is really intensive one, they couldn’t make enough result. Therefore, we decided to make this NGO to change current ineffective situation Japan facing.

Why it would be worthwhile to join us??

Almost all Japanese in all generations would be interested in our NGO for the following reason.
You would be satisfied with our goal. We want to make English as one of the official languages in japan and it would give you various great effect for your life compared to current situation and it is really botherless to join our organization since we don’t require your stressful participation. What we really hope for you guys are spread the information about our organization and convince the people who are not interested in commanding English and also people who are against our goal.

How unique your organization are???

Our organization is really unique one since there are no organizations that are dealing with same kind of topic, making English as an official language in japan.

We think Japanese are really not concerning about this topic because, even though many Japanese don’t know English well, they could live a good life compared to other countries mainly developing countries.

Therefore, we think, if we start to spread the information about efficiency of English properly, they would be able to broaden their view.

What we hope are to give many information to Japanese people and want them to face the problems they are struggling are possible to overcome by our goal.

THIS NGO IS VIRTUAL NGO SO DONNOT TRUST THE THINGS THAT ARE WROTE IN THIS ARTICLE.

Feedbacks

I would like to show feedbacks that I got from my classmates during the NGO presentation session.

I got feedback’s that said we need to do more activities and make more projects if we want to Englishalize Japan more and more.
I was persuaded by these opinion because, when I did NGO presentation, I could realized that I needed to do activities and projects more.
The reason is because compared to other groups NGO activities our organization is expecting are not so obvious one for people who are listening about our organization. Therefore, I decided to make them more clear. For example, doing seminar or visit in universities, companies would be good one.

I really appreciate  those people who gave those ideas.

Also, I got a suggestion that it would be a good idea to use flyer to recruit members
I was really annoyed with how to recruit members, so I got a good advise from this feedback.

the results of the survey that I did to make a better virtual NGO

I would like to show you the results that I conducted through survey monkey.

I asked 10 questions people to answer and this is the questions that I asked.

(I would show some of the questions that would directly lead to make a better NGO)

Firstly, I asked

How many Japanese people do you think are opposed to English being made an official language in Japan???

People who answered more than 50 % of Japanese would oppose this scheme was 54.47%.

So, due to this answers, I came up with an idea that the first mission that we NGO have to do is to care for those people more and more and give them better understandings. (giving them lots of information and persuade them)

Secondly, I asked How often do you hear the news related to this kind of topic???

more than 80% of people answered that they hear those kind of news less than one time per six months, less than a year or never. According to the result, I could infer that many people would not know this kind of topic well. So, I thought I had to pervade the topic related to this to many people in japan.

Surprisingly, however, even though people hear the news sometimes, people had concreate opinions about this topic.

How I could speculate this idea???

I could realize it thanks to this question.

What is your opinion toward making English as an official language in Japan??

There are tons of answers for this thanks to the respondents.

However, the opinions could be distinguished mainly in two groups

At first, the first group was people who against this scheme because of insecurity (whether people could master English)

The another group was cons opinion.

They said English should be an official language in japan, since it will enable us to keep up with other countries in various aspects such as science study, economic situation and so on.

From the research that I have conducted, I could infer that, if people could assure that they could master English, almost all opinions would have opinions that suggest English should be in one of the official language.

Therefore, I decided to persuade Japanese people mainly who against this plan, making English as an official language in japan, that they could master English by showing the trusted opinions (from specialists), examples from other countries (India, Philippine), some theories of learning language and so on.

What kind of effect does being a bilingual have???

There is sometimes an opinion that bilingualism is a disadvantage in learning.

Since 1960, these studies have been widely discredited.

After 1960, the new theory of brain appeared and explained that, in the brain, the languages are in the same place of the brain, so there are no obstacles even if we have many languages in brain. That is, Bilingualism and multilingualism are possible because people have the capacity to easily store two or more languages. People can also function in two or more languages with relative ease.

more than 150 major research studies now broadly conclude that when children continue to develop their abilities in two or more languages throughout their primary school years, they gain a deeper understanding of language and how to use it effectively.

Let me give you examples of effectiveness of being bilingual

1. Cognitive flexibility

bilingual people are often superior to their monolingual counterparts in both divergent and convergent thinking tests.

2. Metalinguistic awareness

Metalinguistic awareness is the ability to analyse language, language forms, how they work and how they are incorporated into the broader language system.

3. Communicative sensitivity

Communicative sensitivity relates to participants’ level of awareness about what is going on in any particular language interaction.

4. Field independence

Field independence is the visual ability to see an overall pattern as well as its component parts. As children grow to maturity, they become more field independent. Bilingual students tend to be more field independent at a younger age.

Cf,
Other advantages of bilingualism

Bilingual opens up new literatures, traditions, and ideas to bilingual students.

Being bilingual, and being exposed to two languages and cultures, often fosters greater tolerance for other cultural groups.

Knowing two languages makes it easier to learn other language

Knowing two languages provides bilingual people with additional skills in the employment market

When bilingual can read and write also, it is known that they would surpass their peers in education.

Opinion

As this article showed to us, there are a lot of merits to be a bilingual. However, to make the circumstance where every people are bilingual or more are really difficult one.

For now, people who are bilingual are the people whose father or mother are foreign people or whose parents have a good job and who lived abroad ever in their life. In japan, it is causing disparity among young generation. I think those trends are malevolent one since children who are raised up in japan exposed to the situation where they cannot do nothing.( not having an opportunity to be a bilingual as natual process )

To solve those problems, those people who have not the opportunity, as I listed above, should study other language to success in their life. So, if English become one of the official language in japan, I think it would give an impartiality to those children who are raised up in japan.

What is happning in the country where English is their official language????

 Summary

Majority of Indian are not able to comprehend what is written on signs, documents driver’s license and so on merely because elite people require English as their first language.

It is unreasonable that many people in India are suffering from this circumstances.

While it is true that English is integral for communication between states, the Central Government and foreign companies, is it really necessary to use it within a state where most people have the same mother tongue? To be perfectly clear, no reasonable person could advocate that English should not be taught. However, there is no reason to believe that people could not be fluent if they learn English from their early years onwards as a second language as other developed countries do.

The statistics on English speaking ability tends to be unreliable for a host of political reasons. To explore the matter at a more foundational level, all development begins with education, and education, of course, stems from language. Yet, language is much more than a means of communication: it defines our identities. Therefore, because of the trend of favoring English, people are exposed to the situation where their identity are eluding.

Opinion

I chose this topic because I wanted to know how countries where their official language is English cope with the problem of language since they have another language except English.

In India, this problem is serious one, since lots of people cannot comprehend English precisely (only to be able to command a bit of English). I think, for India, it is really tough problem to overcome, since the country is developing now and do not have enough condition to educate people in their country.

However, I think japan will not face the problem like India facing, since education system is functioning well and the government is working.( japan is really developed as this aspect even when compared to other developed countries.)

Therefore, I think japan will succeed in the addition of official language in their country by people learning English through support from government and Education.

The ways to improve your English.

Summary

There are lots of problems when you are learning English. At first, the problem of dialect appears when we train English.

Then, what do we have to do??

It is effective to learn from the real English conversation and so on. It does not matter what resources they are. Exposure to the real English is the essence. So, listen proper pronunciation and put out it. Then, try to make friends who are good or like English. Those people will provide you opportunities correcting your mistakes and so on and importantly they will be a best partner for you to talk and it will promote your English ability. Lastly, try to use English as much as possible in daily life. These are the author’s idea for us to improve our ability.

These routines will make your behavior to utilize English under ordinary circumstances.

Opinion

I think the ways author showed are definitely effective one for people who want improve their English skill. As a whole, I think the most important thing to do is impose yourself on the environment where you are supposed to use English when you really want to improve English level.
Therefore, I think that the author’s idea is really good one to master English.

5 biggest challenges of learning English. (n.d.). Retrieved July 18, 2016, from http://www.omniglot.com/language/articles/englishlearningchallenges.htm

What kind of difficulty and trouble are there when people learn English????

There is a connection between the native language of a learner and the particular difficulties in learning and using English, and the kind of mistakes a learner typically makes in English pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary as there is native language interference in learning and using English.

Listening comprehension and speaking in English are the skills generally more frequently used than reading and writing in daily living in an English speaking country. Listening and speaking in English are more difficult and more important for learners to master than reading and writing. Reading and writing allow us to use dictionary and so on. Therefore, listening comprehension and speaking in English are more difficult than reading and writing. Other difficulties in learning and using English vocabulary include fixed word collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms, proverbs and regional differences in vocabulary usage. Then, since English has formal and informal ways of speaking, it makes new learners difficult to remember informal than formal English vocabulary.

To resolve these problems, the author suggested us that using these ways, as listed below, are really effective for us to become a competent English native speaker.

English synonym dictionaries are an excellent tool for memorizing words for the needs of the learner in real life situations. Extensive reading on a variety of topics is another effective method for expanding English vocabulary knowledge by learners of English.

Opinion

I really agree with the author's opinion. Then, it helped me a lot to realize the reason why Japanese are bad at English communication and listening again.

Japanese education is focused on the reading and writing parts. That is, it makes us learning English in an ineffective way as the writer explained us.

For most people, the most concerned thing about using English is whether they can remember the vocabularies they learned or not.

To solve this problem, most people think that they should learn English, at first, from reading and writing which would give them many opportunities to search words they do not know through dictionary and then they could feel some sense of accomplishment.

However, as the author illustrated, it is malevolent ways of studying and it makes us difficult to learn English more and more.

Therefore, I think we need change in learning way of English.

Benefits of learning English. (n.d.). Retrieved July 18, 2016, from http://www.kaplaninternational.com/benefits-learning-english

What kind of merits are there????

Firstly, job opportunity. Those who are able to speak English, even at a basic level, may find that it can lead to a higher level of employment or simply more job prospects.

Even if you could speak a little bit of English, those industries as I listed below would recruit you. Mainly in the business such as hospitality industry, telecommunications, travel, tourism and sales. Because, not only will the staff be able to communicate with more customers, but those English speakers can act as translators, if necessary.

Secondly, it gives you the opportunities to study abroad and getting job in other countries.

Thirdly, News, Music and Entertainment are provided mainly in English

As you can feel it from daily life, almost all of the music that is spreading all over the world is in English. Also, news that are released to the world are in English to pervade it to many people, so it is benevolent for you to master English to keep up with world trend such as music, study and film and so on.

Opinion

I think language that compose of those merits is only English.
Almost all things are entailing English because the countries (mainly U, S and UK) are the most developed in variety of aspects. For example, education, science, astrology and so on. Therefore, mastering English definitely will lead you to step up in every field you will participate.
All in all, there is no reason you resist mastering English the thing that will lead you to the higher place.

Why Can't Japanese People Speak English? (n.d.). Retrieved July 18, 2016, from https://blog.gaijinpot.com/cant-japanese-people-speak-english/

How can Japanese turn them into well English speaker???

Summary

In this article, the author is trying to tell us that the reason why people in japan cannot use English even though they study more than 6 years that at school.(in junior high and high school)

Generally speaking, when people hear those kind of messages, people tend to think like this.
School students get a lesson once a week if they’re lucky, for less than an hour.”
What does this mean??

Students are given few lessons at school. People's attention tended to be directed to this.

However, his main points are quite different and some are quite radical.

The author regards the problem lying in the teacher's way of teaching.( not how they teach English) He insists teachers oppress students to talk during the class, so it prevents students from talking in English during class.

In addition, he explains it’s because they are raised up in the school keeping silence is the best thing. Starting joking and interrupting people have been considered as a rude attitude and they were abused by this. Therefore, the author suggest children tend to be a silent one not to be abused and it contributed to the silence in the class during the class. Therefore, he explains that it's preventing students from  interactive communication class.

Then, he explains that next reason is because people tend to regard  English as an optional thing and regard them as an inferior than Japanese.
He explains us that that is what going on in classes and those ideas lead students not to be attracted by the language English.

Those things are what he thinks causing trouble and he thinks that if we could eliminate these objects
We could give better English to students and lead to them as a good English speaker.

Opinion

I think some of the author’s opinion is right. However, I think some of the opinions are not appropriate one. For example, he showed us the reason of why children cannot command English is really exaggerating one. (He said that is because children have been oppressed by teachers). As he mentioned, I think it is because of children’s attitude toward class. Their interest to the class is really unmotivated. However, it is not because of abuse from teachers as the author mentioned.
Therefore, we are in the time when we have to reconsider entire education system.
In this passage, mainly English is the key theme.
Making English as an interesting thin to study.

Will it make students enhance their potential to suceed in the future??

Summary

Tokyo university has decided to make their daparment of engineering (rigakka) use English in their all classes. Why are they doing that ???

These days, japanse universities are annoying with the fact that international students in japan are declining because of language problem. In other word, japanese is tough to master.

Why are they needing those foreign students???

As other famous universities in the world shows, it will give students to get in touch with different thinking and to meet people who has different background and so on. In other word, it would broaden the students’ horizon by touching with those students from abroad. Therefore, Tokyo university decided to make English as their main language in the department of engineering (rigakka)

In addition to this, they are even considering to change other department main language to English near the future.

 Opinion

I think it is nice idea to make the class language to English.

As this article showed, it would give us lots of opportunities to get in touch with unknown things.

By making it, I think it would give us, students, diversity in our life, since japan has little diverse culture when compared to other countries like Brazil, US and so on.

These countries I illustrated are the role models for the future countries I think because, after globalization started, it is inevitable for us, mainly young people, to interact with variety of people and to conversate with them.

Since japan is a country where people are not so good at English, even though their education is really intensive one, I think the potential to use English will be really awesome thing for us to structure better world.

So, I hope this trend would occur other universities too.
